The memorial represents: A Marine is on point, protecting those who have gone before him. He’s joined at the hip with a Desert Storm soldier giving aid. They are followed by faces emblazoned from all branches of the service going back to World War I. On the back, an American eagle.

Atascadero's Faces of Freedom veterans memorial carries honor

With Memorial Day just around the corner, the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously recognized the Faces of Freedom memorial in Atascadero as the county’s official veterans memorial.

Located at Atascadero Lake, the memorial was dedicated in 2008 and honors all U.S. veterans, with a particular emphasis on the 23,000 who live on the Central Coast.

The memorial is comprised of three components — a sculpture, an engraved brick pathway and a 70-foot-long black granite Heroes Wall with the inscribed names of 230 county veterans. The memorial was built by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation under the direction of Col. William Hatch.

Marine Corps League 680 was one of the major contributors to making this very fine memorial a reality.  Some personal perspectives offered by those who devoted a lot of time and resources:

The original budget was $200,00.00. Over $400,000.00 in donations were raised overall. This is a million dollar Memorial on a par level with nationally recognized monuments.

Tim Haley and Jesse Trevino were among the original members on the committee to get this project off the ground and completed for nearly 3 years.

The detachment members bought many bricks, and donated the money to pay for the Marine Corps flagpole.
Chuck Ward, Detachment member, was responsible for nearly $100,000 in corporate donations.  Tom Burgett, manager of Home Depot, detachment member, secured $25,000 from Home Depot corporate.

Rick Shimmelphenning contributed many hours and Machinery in the construction phase of the memorial and purchased many bricks.  Rick and wife Shauna established the annual "Hot Rod and Motorcycle Poker Run" fundaiser and generated a net $12,000 toward the construction of the memorial.

Detachment members who gave of their time include;
Rick and Shauna Schimmelphenning and family
Tim and Janet Haley
Jesse Trevino
Ann and Bill Hatch and family
Tom and Marcia Torgerson
Bob and Pat Prophet
Bob Clark
Tony and Priscilla Rivera
Chuck and Barbara Ward
Ray Bacon
Russ Tolchard
Carlos and Leslie Morales
Gary Corippo

The cash donations the Detachment was responsible for was nearly $125,000 both directly or indirectly.
Not to mention the many man hours that were also contributed by a host of detachment members and their families.

The memorial will continue to be a focus of the detachment efforts pertaining to maintenance, Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies and celebrations.

Letter from Col. Hatch to Commandant Tim Haley:

Tim,

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation for the Marine Corps League's support of the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Dedication on Saturday 8 Nov 08.  All the Marines who participated were outstanding in every aspect of the ceremony.  The Central Coast Leathernecks did their normal superb job and added a true touch of professionalism to the event.

The long hours spent by Jesse Trevino and Rick Schimm were pivotal in making the Memorial a reality.  The entire Detachment really stepped up to the plate whenever we needed them.  All the Veterans in the County owe a great debt of gratitude to the hard work the Marine Corps League does throughout San Luis Obispo County. Your team is the best.

Semper Fi!
